AN ORGINAL CHRISTMAS
By Jim Hampton,
producer, An Original Christmas

The idea of creating an entire day of produced Christmas programming originated when I was Production Manager of WLS in Chicago. We wanted to give the jocks a day off, so I produced a 12-hour special that ran from 3pm Christmas Eve to 3pm Christmas day.

When I left WLS to begin my career in radio syndication with Ken Draper at Draper-Blore, I decided to create a syndicated version for radio stations across the US. It was called "The Christmas Album." It contained lots of great Holiday music, stories, old time radio shows, celebrity interviews and the voices of children. It was first hosted by my partner, Dave Prince, later re-done by Don Bleu. And, the latest version I did, from 1998 I believe, is called An Original Christmas, hosted by the late China Smith. In fact, this may have been the last syndication work he did.

Also, in this version, you will hear some vignettes by Robin and Betty. Betty is the legendary Betty Thomas, who later would be a star in Hill Street Blues for TV and an award winning film director. She is also a brilliant comedienne and a wonderful person, and tall - perhaps, the tallest woman I have ever known. Successful L.A. Voice-Over guy Brian Cummings is also heard, in addition to Joni Caryl (KRTH), Tom Murphy (WCFL), and Tony Cruz, a staff writer at the time. I haven't heard from Tony in years.

The musical theme is a creation of my buddy, Bo Donovan, formerly of Silvertree. He used to work with Ken Draper, Chris Lane and me in the 70's.

I think it is time to re-do this show. I love the Christmas music, but most of all I love the special features. I miss that in radio today. I also produced the counterpart to this, a country version, with the late Chris Lane called "Christmas in the Country." I would love to find a copy of that someday.

In any case, I hope this program brings back all the special memories of Christmases past, when it was still "An Original Christmas."

Merry Christmas everyone!

[This program was designed to run with 8 commercial minutes in each hour. The approximate running time of the REELRADIO presentation of An Original Christmas, without commercials, is ten hours, 14 minutes.]
